Diabetes Care In The 21st Century-An Exciting Frontier

April 23, 2001 Salina, Kansas

As a health care provider, you feel the frustrations of shortened hospital stays and shorter appointment times. You need to ensure your client has all the tools they need to manage their diabetes care. You need strategies for helping patients effectively self-manage their diabetes, identifying potential problems and enhancing your skills for problem solving challenging situations.

Innovative advances in diabetes care are evident in every dimension - new oral medications, new insulin, nutrition guidelines and choices, new glucose monitors, computer related technology, and new administration devices and aides. Preventing the onset of diabetes, especially among our nation’s youth, should be a high priority of care and education. Even more exciting is the concept of self-care and self-management as the basis for diabetes treatment and education in this age of managed care. This comprehensive diabetes seminar will provide a theoretical background and describe clinical applications to help you to better care for and promote a self-care model for diabetics.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this seminar, the participant will be able to:

    1. Relate facts about diabetes, including pathophysiology, screening and diagnosis criteria, and impact and prevention of short and long term complications.
    2. Explore both traditional and innovative management frameworks in the realm of nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and medications.
    3. Analyze behavioral change strategies and management options that enhance diabetes care and control.
    4. Recognize the components of self-care and self-management, their benefits and their challenges.
